Is London a good destination to learn English in summer?

Learning the English language in London can offer a wide array of exciting opportunities from landing a place at a top university to securing a well-paid job that requires someone with impressive linguistic skills. This is why many people around the world are now bilingual, being able to speak English as well as the language native to their country.

In London, it is possible to immerse yourself in the British culture as it will help you to get to grips with everything from slang and commonly used colloquialisms to idioms. Although at first these are hard to master, with enough persistence and practise you will get used to them. Listening to Cockney rhyming slang will help you to improve your language abilities and push you to the max. There are many different ways to learn English, reading text books and practising your skills in a classroom is one thing, but getting out and about and hearing real British people speaking can be a very different experience.

There is so much to do in London that you will be encouraged to go out and practice your English as much as possible. The majority of people in England only speak one language, so they will not be able to communicate with you in your native language, therefore it can be essential to use your English with things such as public transport, restaurants or tourist attractions. London has some of the best transport links in the world and within a matter of hours you are able to visit many different parts of the country, and as a result you can listen to different accents and regional dialects.

On the other hand, London can be quite expensive, therefore if you are looking to have lessons to improve your English, then it can be very costly.

london-hustle-bustleIt can be argued that people in London aren’t the friendliest people in the world, so it is possible that they might not be too keen to help you practise your English. The city does have a reputation of this, but it could simply be that it is a very vibrant and
buzzing city with many workers with important jobs who are under pressure to work well, especially in the hustle and bustle of one of the world’s largest cities.

When you walk through streets of London, especially at the weekend, it’s likely that you will hear many different languages being spoken. Whilst this shows the diversity of the city, it is not very useful if you want to speak English. This could be particularly true in the summer, when there are normally more tourists than at any other time of the year. Furthermore, the London accent can be hard to understand if you are not familiar with it and if you can only speak a little English then it will be difficult to know what is being said.

Overall, despite some downsides, I would say that London would be a good place to learn English in the summer. There are many different ways in which living in the city can help your to improve your language skills, and being able to practise them regularly is incredibly valuable.
